It has been an underwhelming season for the German, but this was a career high-point. The pair were neck and neck at 3-3 in their head-to-head going into this one. Zverev dominated from the start though and it took some astonishing net-play from Federer to begin a fightback. An instant classic.

5) Nick Kyrgios vs Rafael Nadal (Acapulco, R2)

What a blockbuster this was. Kyrgios is known for bringing his best to the big stadiums against the world’s elite – and he did not disappoint. The Aussie had recently slipped behind 2-3 in his head-to-head against Nadal, their last meeting at the 2017 China Open where Nadal dismantled his opponent. But Kyrgios came up with the very best of his ingenious shot-making in this match, and at the tensest moments. A three-hour epic full of sensational hitting and dramatic twists.

But the Austrian found the explosive tennis we have seen more and more this year to earn his first big title. A career-changing performance.

2) Novak Djokovic vs Juan Martin Del Potro (Rome, QF)

It was only Del Potro’s third tournament of the year, and sadly one of his last. Boy did he give us a show here though. The Argentine came out clubbing winners off both flanks and took the first set. But, as ever, Djokovic fought back with some inspired tennis and saved two match points at 5-6 in the second. You will not see a match where the Serbian was as fired up as he was here. It was simply one of the extraordinary atmospheres all year under the lights of a packed Campo Centrale.

1) Dominic Thiem vs Novak Djokovic (London, RR)

One of the most astonishing matches ever to grace the O2. Thiem had won three of their last four encounters going into this, but he had never defeated the world No.2 on a hard court. Djokovic raised his level – but Thiem met it. An amazing three set epic where both players pushed their bodies to the limit. Not to be missed.
