The clay court season continued to thrill and stun. Rafael Nadal was once more the man to beat, but the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open had so much more to it.

It had the returns of Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro, it had the emotional end of David Ferrer’s career and it also had the stars of Next Gen ATP shining bright.

Whenever these two met previously, it was always a case of turning into a four-set marathon. Surely this one would be no different on home soil?

7) Juan Martin del Potro vs Laslo Djere (R2)

This marked the return of the one of the most popular players on Tour. Juan Martin del Potro returned to action for the first time since October, and it’s safe to say he gave it a go against Serbia’s Laslo Djere.

6) Roger Federer vs Richard Gasquet (R2)

On the topic of returns, there was another at the Mutua Madrid Open, as Roger Federer graced the red dirt for the first time in three years. And the Swiss maestro didn’t disappoint as he came up against Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

5) Dominic Thiem vs Fabio Fognini (R3)

Still fresh from his win over Rafael Nadal in Barcelona and then going on to win that title, Dominic Thiem was on a six-match winning streak as he faced the always tricky Fabio Fognini. This one had skill, touch and plenty of excitement.

4) Alexander Zverev vs David Ferrer (R2)

Emotions took centre stage in this one as David Ferrer played his final match before retirement. The legendary Spaniard won 27-Tour level titles, including 15 on clay, but he just wasn’t able to topple the defending champion Alexander Zverev.

3) Dominic Thiem vs Roger Federer (QF)

A titanic tussle, between two giants of the game. Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem both had match points, in this epic display of hitting, it was truly a masterclass of the one-handed backhands.

2) Alexander Zverev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas (QF)

A rivalry that will dominate tennis for the next decade. Two youngsters who are already stars of the game but, as Alexander Zverev looked to defend his title, the Greek on the other side of the net had plans of his own.

1) Rafael Nadal vs Stefanos Tstisipas (SF)

It ebbed and it flowed, it promised and it delivered. Rafael Nadal wasn’t used to this, he was beaten in the semi-finals in Monte Carlo and in Barcelona, surely not again? The five-time champion was about to be involved in one of the battles of the season so far.
