The final event of the clay court season before Roland Garros, and it’s fair to say the Internazionali BNL D’Italia Open didn’t disappoint.

It was a tournament which had it all, high profile comebacks, match points saved, two matches in a day for some, all caused by a chaotic rain delay washing out an entire day of action.

10) Matteo Berrettini v Alexander Zverev (R1)

With the partisan home crowd behind him, could the Italian stop Alexander Zverev in this first round contest? Zverev, who won the tournament in 2017, didn’t come into the tournament with the most ideal momentum.

9) Jannik Sinner v Steve Johnson (R1)

17-year old wildcard Jannik Sinner had only won one match on Tour as he came into this opening round contest, and he had to save a match point here against USA’s Steve Johnson. But who came out on top?

8) Frances Tiafoe v Joao Sousa (R1)

The winner would play Roger Federer in the second round, and you could see what it meant to both players. A three-hour tussle, ending in a third set tie-break. Would it be the Next Gen. star, or the Portuguese who is at home as any on a clay court?

7) Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal (Final)

With 33 Masters 1000 titles each, perhaps the greatest rivalry in tennis history was renewed for episode 54. Novak Djokovic came into this with a 28-25 lead over Rafael Nadal, having not lost to the Spaniard since the semi-final stage in this very tournament last year.

6) Diego Schwartzman v Novak Djokovic (SF)

Two years ago, the Argentine pushed Novak Djokovic to five-sets at the French Open, so this had all the makings of a potential clay court classic. Djokovic came through a thriller against Juan Martin del Potro en-route to this semi-final.

5) Juan Sebastian Cabal/Robert Farah v Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (QF)

The defending champions against the Americans who had won this four times previously, it was a thriller which went deep into the third set, with plenty of match points saved.

4) Dominic Thiem v Fernando Verdasco (R2)

Fernando Verdasco showed he still had plenty of class to offer on the Tour, especially on a clay court. Up against the World No. 4 Dominic Thiem here, Verdasco was back to his best.

3) Daniil Medvedev v Nick Kyrgios (R1)

Nick Kyrgios is always box-office, combine that with three action packed sets of tennis, against an opponent who too is vastly talented – this had it all.

2) Borna Coric v Roger Federer (R3)

Roger Federer had already played a match earlier in the day, and if he wanted a quick contest here, Borna Coric was having none of it. The Swiss maestro had to save match points in what ended as an absolute classic.

1) Juan Martin del Potro v Novak Djokovic (QF)

The World No. 1 against one of the most popular players on tour. Juan Martin del Potro only returned in Madrid from a lengthy injury lay-off, but he pushed Djokovic to his limits here. A match which concluded at 1:05am local time, this was the best match during a tremendous week.
